GPS Navigation Update VAG

GPS Navigation Updates for Volkswagen, Audi, Seat, and Škoda

Updating your GPS maps allows you to use the latest maps on your navigation system. Depending on your vehicle and the multimedia system installed, you can update the maps using an SD card, a USB flash drive, directly online, or through the manufacturer’s official portal.

For VAG Group vehicles, the update method depends primarily on the generation of the multimedia system: RNS, MIB1, MIB2, or MIB3.

Please note: Updating the GPS maps is different from updating the multimedia system software.
If you are looking for a firmware update for your MIB2 MST2, please also see our page dedicated to the MST2 software update for MIB2 units.

Why update GPS maps?

In particular, a recent mapping project provides the following:

  • new and modified routes
  • new speed limits
  • new points of interest
  • new information about the road network
  • more up-to-date navigation
  • the latest map data available for your system.

Updating the maps does not necessarily change the multimedia system’s internal software.

How do I know which update to use?

Before downloading a map, it is important to identify your navigation system precisely.

Depending on your vehicle, you may have, for example:

  • RNS 510
  • MIB1 Discover Media
  • MIB2 Discover Media
  • MIB2 Discover Pro
  • MIB2 Amundsen
  • MIB2 Columbus
  • Navi System
  • MIB3

The vehicle model alone is not always sufficient to determine the correct mapping. You should also take into account the generation of the multimedia system, its model number, and, in some cases, the version currently installed.

Volkswagen GPS Update

Volkswagen vehicles equipped with a Discover Media or Discover Pro system can use different generations of maps.

The systems in question may be found, for example, on:

  • Golf 7
  • Passat B8
  • Polo 5
  • Polo 6
  • Tiguan
  • Tiguan 2
  • Touran
  • T-Roc
  • Arteon
  • Shopping Cart
  • Transporter T6
  • and other models equipped with a compatible Discover system.

Discover Media and Discover Pro

For the MIB1 and MIB2 systems, the maps can be installed using a navigation SD card, depending on the specific system.

Volkswagen also makes the map files available through its official portal.

Audi GPS update

Audi uses several generations of navigation systems, including:

  • MMI 3G
  • MMI 3G+
  • MIB2
  • MHI2
  • newer navigation systems.

The update method therefore depends heavily on the system installed in the vehicle.

For some Audi systems, software updates may be available through myAudi / Audi connect, while others require a specific procedure or professional service.

The vehicles in question may include, among others:

  • Leon 5F
  • Ibiza 6F
  • Ateca
  • Arona
  • Tarraco
  • Alhambra
  • and other models equipped with a compatible navigation system.

GPS update or MIB2 software update?

These two operations should not be confused.

GPS/Maps Update

It pertains to the navigation maps used by the GPS system.

In particular, it allows you to update:

  • roads;
  • speed limits;
  • points of interest;
  • mapping data.

Software/Firmware Update

It relates to the multimedia system’s internal software.

A firmware update can, among other things, fix certain bugs and improve system stability. In some cases, it can also resolve operational or connection issues with Apple CarPlay, App-Connect , or Android Auto.

For MIB2 systems running MST2 firmware, see our guide:

⚠️ Important: Before updating

Do not install map data intended for another navigation system.

A MIB2 Discover Media mapping is not necessarily compatible with another MIB2 or MIB3 system.

Before you begin:

  1. Identify the multimedia system that is installed.
  2. Check your system’s model number.
  3. Check the map generation.
  4. Check the region in question.
  5. Check the manufacturer’s update requirements.
  6. Back up your SD card if necessary.

A navigation SD card may also be protected or linked to a specific system. Therefore, simply copying files from one SD card to another is not always sufficient.

Key Takeaways

The GPS update primarily concerns the maps, while the MST2 update concerns the multimedia system software.

Before installing anything, always identify your system precisely and verify that the map is compatible with your vehicle.
