Purpose : activates multifunction steering wheel with/without paddles (retrofit)
(Modifications only possible after retrofitting the multifunction steering wheel)
Be careful how you attach your old airbag, if you want to reuse it with the new steering wheel. There are 2 types of attachment.
Check your steering control module to see if it’s compatible with the steering wheel controls. Here’s a page on the Ross-Tech website with all the Golf 6 module versions. Make sure you choose a compatible module (HighLine, with Slip Ring and Steering Angle Sensor identical to your old module).
Procedure:
1 – Engine off, ignition off, connect your official VAG-COM VCDS cable to the computer, then plug the other end into your vehicle’s diagnostics socket.
2 – Switch on the ignition and run the VCDS program.
Line 1 (For modules 1K0-953-549…):
3 – Click on “Select” then click on “16 – Multifunction handwheel”.
4– Click on “Coding – 07”.
5 – Set the value according to the desired options (replace the ? with the corresponding number)

After changing the module, you should see the ESP and power steering lights on the ODB.
Angle sensor recalibration
Prerequisites.
- Start the vehicle
- turn the steering wheel all the way to the right, then all the way to the left
- Move the vehicle forward a few metres, but do not exceed 20 km/h.
- If the steering is hard during this test, stop the vehicle with the wheels aligned and the steering wheel straight.
- Don’t move the steering wheel.
- Leave the engine running and do not switch off the ignition.
- The power supply must be at least 12V.
[44 – Power steering] -> [Coding II – 11] (40168) -> [Basic setting – 04].
Select group 060 and press ON/OFF/NEXT. The first field should then display OK
Check
[44 – Power Steering] -> [Measurement groups – 08]
Select group 007 and press Go! The first field must have a value between -1.5° and 1.5°.
Power steering adaptation
- Engine still running
- Center the steering wheel and keep it centered for 5s
- Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and hold it there for 10s.
- Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and hold it there for 10s.
- Center the steering wheel
- Turn off the engine and switch off the ignition
- Switch the ignition back on.
- Wait 10s.
- The light on the ODB should go out. If not, drive a short distance.
