Basic setting of G85 steering angle sensor for MQB
Important note: This procedure applies ONLY to models with ABS EPS-MQB-… (e.g. VW Golf 7, Passat B8, Tiguan 2, Audi A3 8V, TT 8S, Q3 F3, Seat Leon 5F, Skoda Octavia 3…)
Prerequisites:
- Start the vehicle.
Access to basic settings:
- Access the steering assistance module (J500) using address 44 (Power steering) in Auto-Scan or Select.
- Check that the component is identified as EPS-MQB-…
- In “Security Access – 16” enter the code: 19249

Basic adjustment of the steering angle sensor:

Setting procedure:
- Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and hold it in the stop position for 5 seconds.
- Turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and hold it in the stop position for 5 seconds.
- Return the steering wheel to the center (neutral position) and hold it in place.
Stop the procedure:
- Several error messages and warnings may appear on the cluster. Specific messages may vary depending on vehicle equipment.
Finalize setting:
- Repeat the procedure to turn the steering wheel left and right, then return it to the center.
- Access the Controller menu and select the Back option (06).
- Turn ignition on for 10 seconds.
Remarks:
- During basic setup, you should see the message “Running”. However, it may not change to show “Finished Correctly”.
- Some control modules can signal DTC (Databus) codes, but these can be erased after a 10-second switch-on cycle.
Be sure to follow these steps carefully to ensure correct adjustment of the steering angle sensor on your MQB vehicle (VW Golf 7, Passat B8, Tiguan 2, Audi A3 8V, Seat Leon 5F, Skoda Octavia 3 …).
Basic setting of G85 steering angle sensor for ABS MK70
Important note: This procedure applies ONLY to models with Conti / Teves MK70 ABS / ASR (e.g. VW Golf 5/6, Audi A3 8P, TT 8J, Seat Leon 1P, Skoda Octavia 2…).
This procedure shows how to set the zero position for the G85 steering wheel angle sensor found in many ESP-equipped vehicles. This procedure must be followed when a parallelism is performed, or if the J104 ABS ECU has been replaced.

How to solve fault 00778 steering angle transmitter with VCDS?
00778 – Steering angle transmitter(G85) 005 – No or incorrect basic setting/adjustment
This procedure shows how to set the zero position for the G85 steering wheel angle sensor found in many ESP-equipped vehicles. This procedure must be followed when a parallelism is carried out or if one of these components has been replaced:
- ABS/EDL/ASR/ESP computer (J104)
- Steering wheel angle sensor (G85)
- Steering column
Certain conditions must be met before starting the procedure with VCDS VAG-Com:
- Start the vehicle
- Turn the steering wheel one turn to the right, then one turn to the left
- Drive the car in a straight line on level ground for a short distance at a speed of less than 20 km/h.
- If the steering wheel is straight during the previous step, stop the vehicle with the wheels parallel to the axis of the car.
- Keep your hands off the wheel
- Keep the engine running, do not switch off the ignition

<03 – ABS brakes>
Enter code 40168
Choose group 060
This will store the current position of the steering wheel as zero. You should receive a message informing you of the success of the procedure; if an error is displayed, this means that it was carried out incorrectly.
Calibration procedure for Passat B5 and Audi A4/S4/A6/S6 and A8/S8 before 2005:
<03 – ABS brakes>
Enter code 40168
Select group 001
This will store the current position of the steering wheel as zero. You should receive a message informing you of the success of the procedure; if an error is displayed, this means that it was carried out incorrectly.
Today, the steering angle sensor is most often integrated with the steering rack, also known as the torque sensor.

Once calibration of the steering angle sensor (G85) has been completed, the 44-speed power steering module (J500) may have DTC C10AC – Unlearned steering limit stops. The steering limit stops must be adjusted as follows:
Start the engine and turn the steering wheel all the way to the right and hold for 5 to 10 seconds. The vehicle should beep. Turn the steering wheel all the way to the left and the same beep should sound. Straighten the wheels and wait 5-10 seconds while observing the steering and traction control warnings. They should extinguish, although it’s advisable to scan the vehicle again for DTCs before test-driving.
Notes: To confirm the status of G85 calibration, refer to group MVB 032.
If the basic parameter group generates an error message, check that the live G85 reading is ±1.5°. Readings such as 359° would indicate that the slip ring has mechanically extended a full turn.
The slip ring is the electronic module of the 16-way steering wheel. If the vehicle has deployed airbags and the slip ring has been replaced, ensure that the module is long-coded using VCDS.
Some Audi A4 B8 8K/A5 8T/Q5 8R models may have address 1B-Active Steering (J792) installed in addition to the 16-way steering wheel electronics.
If mechanical repairs are carried out on the front end or front end alignment, these vehicles may require additional basic setting steps to resolve the DTC: 01087 – Basic setting not carried out.
